Republican lawmaker introduces legislation to abolish Department of Education

Just hours after Betsy DeVos was barely confirmed as secretary of Education in a tie-breaking vote, a Kentucky House Republican introduced legislation to completely dissolve the Dept. of Education.
Rep. Thomas Massie’s bill is only one sentence long, simply positing that “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.”
Massie has also co-sponsored a bill to similarly end the Environmental Protection Agency, reminiscent of President Reagan’s proposal to dismantle the Dept. of Education and Energy, which never came to pass. Seven other Republicans have already signed onto Massie’s bill.
