Former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, are launching a charitable foundation that will focus on cancer research, preventing sexual assault on college campuses and supporting education at community colleges, among other issues.
“I’m more optimistic than I’ve ever been since I’ve been in public life,” the former vice president said in a video announcing the Biden Foundation.
“We’re better positioned than any country in the world to lead the world in the 21st century — not just by the example of our power, but by the power of our example,” he added.
The Washington Post reported the foundation's headquarters will be located Washington, D.C., and incorporated in Delaware. Joe Biden told the Post that the it will focus largely on cancer issues after the loss of his son, Beau, to brain cancer in May 2015.
“We look forward to this new chapter where we will continue our work to ensure that everyone — no matter their income level, race, gender, age, or sexuality — is treated with dignity and gets a fair shot at achieving the American Dream,” Joe Biden and the former second lady said in a statement to the Post.
The Bidens boarded a train back to Delaware on Jan. 20 just after President Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States.
Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obamalaunched the Obama Foundation just before they left the White House. Their foundation will be based in Chicago’s South Side and will focus on “developing the next generation of citizens,” according to the Obamas.
